An airport worker has been killed in a horrifying incident that saw him sucked into a plane's engine.

The Air India ground crew member died instantly when he was sucked into the aircraft's engine at Mumbai Airport on Wednesday afternoon, reports the Mirror.

The plane was reportedly in a parking bay preparing to depart for Hyderabad when the fatality occurred.

According to the Daily Mail, Air India Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani said in a statement: "An Air India technician died in a mishap during pushback of flight AI 619. The incident is being investigated.

"We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident at Mumbai airport. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family."

It is not clear how the worker came to be in a position for the incident to happen.

The Evening Standard reports that it is also not yet known whether passengers were on board at the time.
