We all know that on ice is dangerous - it's usually impossible to tell how thick the surface is and how deep the water is underneath.

But this woman had a rather different experience when she was out walking with her dog Ivy at the frozen Cooney Reservoir in Montana recently.

The footage shows the pair gingerly taking to the ice, which is completely clear underfoot.

"Well this is something I don't see everyday, I'm out on the shoreline at Kuni and it's just frozen over. I've got Ivy by my side and the ice is decently thick and it is really clear in a lot of spots."

The woman goes on to explain how you can see the bubbles frozen in the ice and even see all the way down to the bottom of the lake.

She can be heard saying: "And even though I know it's thick enough, it's really pretty unnerving to be able to see the bottom of the lake. I mean you can see right through and see the bottom and it really is kind of a different feeling."

The Montana state park is popular for fishing and camping with 82 campsites in the area. The average temperature in Montana in December ranges between 0 degrees and minus 11 degrees and according to US Climate Data it's the coldest month of the year in the area.

In December last year YouTube user Tomas N uploaded a video showing himself and a friend walking across a frozen mountain lake in the High Tatras Mountains in Slovakia.

The stunning video shows perfectly clear ice underfoot with the rocks at the bottom of the lake totally visible.

The video has had more than eight million views since it was uploaded and you can the full video below.
