'I want to see Allah': Lufthansa passenger tries to open plane door

A man has been arrested after allegedly trying to open a plane door on a Lufthansa flight.

The passenger was restrained by fellow passengers and cabin crew as he fumbled with the controls on an emergency exit door on a Frankfurt to Belgrade flight.

According to the IB Times, the man, who was Jordanian with an American passport, threatened to bring down the plane and shouted that he wished to join Allah along with all the passengers.

Players of a Serbian handball team were among those that helped restrain the man.

President of the Vojvodina handball team, Milan Djukic, told the Daily Telegraph: "About halfway into the flight he tried to open a plane door, but the cabin crew stopped him.

Two players "guarded" the suspect for the rest of the flight while he was restrained in the business section of the plane.

Lufthansa spokesman Andreas Bartels told Sky News: "A passenger got up and tried to do something at the door, but was stopped by crew members and other passengers.

"The passenger was then restrained for the remainder of the flight in his seat and handed over to the authorities in Belgrade."

Mr Bartels said that the door the man was trying to open was not to the cockpit, adding: "It was a normal door, which of course cannot be opened in-flight... it was not the cockpit door.

"The safety of the flight was not jeopardised and the flight landed safely in Belgrade."

The suspect is being held in pre-trial detention on the grounds of endangering public safety.
