No Proteas in ICC Test team of year

The world's number-one ranked five-day team, South Africa, has no representatives in the Test team of the year announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday.

South Africa hold a healthy lead in the ICC Test rankings, albeit one that will be cut significantly as a result of their series defeat in India - confirmed last week when the Proteas fell 2-0 down with one match to play.

However, the Proteas played only five Tests - against West Indies and Bangladesh - in the ICC's qualification period, between September 18 2014 and September 13 2015.

And a selection panel chaired by former India captain Anil Kumble opted to include players from four other nations - Australia, England, New Zealand and Pakistan - in their line-up, with India's Ravichandran Ashwin named as 12th man.

Alastair Cook has been named as captain of the Test XI, while fellow England players Joe Root and Stuart Broad have also gained selection.

David Warner, Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood are the three Australians picked, while New Zealand and Pakistan have two representatives each in Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Younis Khan and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

Australia captain Smith and Black Caps left-arm paceman Boult are the only players to have been named in both the Test and ODI XIs, with Root 12th man for the latter.

The ODI XI features three South Africa stars in AB de Villiers - the captain - Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir, while Mustafizur Rahman is the first Bangladesh player to be selected (after Shakib Al Hasan made the 2009 Test team).

Kumble, chairman of the ICC's Cricket Committee, said: "I would like to congratulate all the players for their selection in the Test and ODI teams of the year. It is an achievement for each of them to be proud of and a recognition for their good performances in the qualifying period.

"It was a particularly busy year, with a series of stellar performances throughout the Test and ODI formats, not least in a hugely successful ICC Cricket World Cup 2015."
