A man accused of sexually assaulting a sleeping passenger on an Emirates flight from Dubai to New York has pleaded not guilty.

Nadeem Mehmood Quraishi, 42, appeared in court on Monday facing an abusive sexual conduct charge.

The victim had fallen asleep an hour into the flight on 26 October after taking an anti-anxiety pill.

When she woke up a few hours later she noticed that "the hand lotion she had placed in the pocket in front of her seat was missing."

The woman realised that lotion had been "spread on her arms, chest, and up her legs."

According to the Smoking Gun, the woman said that when walking to the bathroom "her vaginal area was sore", and she "saw that her underwear had been shifted and that lotion was in her vaginal area and on her underwear."

When she returned to her seat, she asked Quraishi where her lotion was, and when he returned it to her, she told the cabin crew something had happened to her when she was asleep.

According to the Daily Mail, court documents said that when the flight attendants questioned Quraishi, he reportedly admitted applying lotion to the woman's "arms, shoulders, and legs and used the lotion in her vaginal area."

He said that he thought the woman "needed it," and that the sleeping passenger "enjoyed it because she did not resist."

Detective Christopher Caruso, assigned to the case, said: "The defendant also told the flight attendants that he liked it and that it happened to him as a child."

Quraishi, from Staten Island, is out on $50,000 bail, and his lawyer said he's interested in working out a plea with the US Attorney's office.
