A valley in Scotland has been found to be the 'snowiest' place in Britain.

The valley, called Garbh Choire Mor, is located in the slopes of Braeriach, the country's third highest mountain, in the Cairngorms.

Mountain walker Iain Cameron writes about, photographs and measures snow and has his records published by the Royal Meteorological Society.

He told The Sunday Times: "When I say snowiest, I mean the place in Britain where snow always lasts the longest.

"When all the other snow has melted it's still to be found here. So durable is it, in fact, that it has disappeared only five times since the 1700s."

Garbh Choire Mor is a glacial valley created from the ice that repeatedly covered Scotland up to around 14,000 years ago.

So why does the snow never melt?

According to the Mirror, Iain said: "All we know is that, in most years, snow builds up to incredible depths — 75ft plus in the snowiest years — and the subsequent summer and autumn almost never manage to melt it all."

It's not the only place in Britain where snow survives through the summer.

According to the BBC, 73 patches of snow have survived on Scotland's hills from last winter - the most for 21 years.

Iain said: "This includes, also for the first time since 1994, mountains in the north west Highlands, where 12 patches survived.

"The reason so many patches survived is undoubtedly to do with the very cool spring, which saw frequent and heavy snow showers right through May and even into June.
