Sniffer dogs searching for a missing British man in Amsterdam have picked up his scent by a canal in the city, according to new reports.

Christopher Nelson, 24, from Midlothian, disappeared in the early hours of November 15 after going for a walk from Rechtboomsloot, where he and his fiancee had been staying with a friend.

Nelson's German fiancee, Stefanie Kollroß, said she had been out with him in the city the night before, and said they had gone on a boat tour, been to a bar and eaten pizza at 3am.

However, Nelson was unable to sleep and got up a few hours later to go for a walk.

According to Dutch News, his father Scott said: "Since then we have been in a living nightmare.

"It's in my head when I go to sleep and it's still there when I wake up. I can't shake it off."

It is not believed Christopher had been drinking heavily or taking drugs before he went missing.

Christopher and Stefanie had been living in Dusseldorf, but had been planning on moving back to Edinburgh.

Speaking to the Mirror, his mother Donna said: "He was very much looking forward to getting back to come and live in Scotland.

"That is what he would tell his sisters at Christmas.

"That's not a boy who would leave us."

His father has travelled to Amsterdam to aid in the search for his son.
