From the year 1959 to the late 1990s, the classic Mini was labelled Britain's best-loved small car. Today, however, BMW has dragged the Mini into the 21st century and the firm's latest creation is arguably one of MINI's most important milestones. First launched in 2007, the BMW MINI Clubman is back and it's bigger and better than before – in fact, it's the biggest MINI yet.

But, in order to live up to expectations as the brand's first C-segment people-mover, the second generation of BMW MINI's Clubman is taking on the likes of Volkswagen's Golf, which became one of the world's favourite small family cars in 1974 and is now in its seventh generation. So, which of these family-focused motors is the car to own?
