Blackpool residents were plagued by some rather unusual weather conditions at the weekend thanks to Storm Abigail.

The storm appears to have whipped the sea into a frenzy in the coastal town - and locals were a little confused after spotting waves of thick grey foam making its way along the promenade, blowing up over the sea wall and covering passing cars.

The foam was caught up in strong winds blowing it over the sea wall and into the path of oncoming drivers on the road.

It's thought the sea foam appeared as a result of the adverse weather conditions that were present in the area thanks to Storm Abigail.

According to the Ocean Service, sea foam is created naturally and forms when the water is moved by the waves and wind.

Marine Insight reports that sea foam is often made up of various decomposed materials including plants and animals.

However, sea foam is not as harmless as it may look. The substance can contain noxious substances that can be problematic for both humans and animals.
