Holidays are among the most expensive things we spend money on - so why is it that, on average, we're prepared to waste £160 by leaving stuff behind when we pack to go home?

Online travel agency, Sunshine reveals that towels, books, clothes and toiletries were just some of the things we intentionally leave behind at the end of the holiday because we don't think it's worth re-packing them.

A recent survey carried out by the company found that 57 per cent of people admitted to leaving things behind on holiday mainly because they wanted to free up space in their luggage.

Another 28 per cent also said that they had thrown things away because they saw them as 'disposable'.

The most common things we leave behind are:

1. Partly used toiletries - 75%

2. Sun protection cream/lotion(s) - 62%

3. Beach towel(s) - 53%

4. Books - 50%

5. Holiday clothes - 48%

6. Shoes - 36%

7. Pool accessories (e.g. inflatables) -21%

8. Beach accessories (e.g. parasol, deck chair) - 16%

9. Unopened snacks (e.g. sweets, crisps) -8%

10. Fashion accessories (hats, belts etc.) - 6%

Managing Director of Sunshine, Chris Clarkson, said: "£160 is a lot of money to be wasting; just think how much this would be as a collective amount for the UK every year!"
