An inquest this week heard how one group from the bash had already got in a cab home, and Dale was waiting for the second one to arrive.

He suggested jumping onto one of the boats, but as he did so he ended up in the water instead.

Two of his friends jumped into rescue him but it was dark and he could not be seen.

At the time, a spokesman for North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) told the Daily Mail: "When ambulance crews arrived at the scene one man was out of the water, one man was still in the water and one man was missing.

"The two men who survived were taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital."

Pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collis told the inquest she had found a large cut on his head and said there was a "strong possibility" he had become unconscious so could not swim to safety, reports the Mirror.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Anita Bhardwaj, Liverpool area coroner, said Dale's cause of death was drowning and concluded it was a "tragic accident".
