A Swedish man has been killed and another seriously injured after they crashed into a car while riding down a hill in a shopping trolley.

The incident occurred in Coogee, a beachside suburb of Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday.

One man died at the scene and his friend, also 28, is in a serious condition in hospital.

It is thought the pair were engaging in what they believed to be harmless fun, and were riding down the hill at around 50mph.

They were reportedly walking home when they came across the discarded trolley. One of them got in it, and the other stood on the back of it as they rode down Coogee Bay Road.

At some point, it is thought they veered onto the wrong side of the road, and crashed into a car coming in the opposite direction.

One witness told 9News that paramedics worked on the man that died for around 40 minutes at the scene, to no avail.

Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate told Sky News: "We're dealing with what is just a tragic, tragic incident, both for the close group of friends and the families concerned."

According to the Daily Telegraph, Dengate added: "The male that was in the shopping trolley was catapulted out, landing in a curb on the southern side of the road, the other person landed after the collision in the middle of the road."

The driver of the car was not injured.

A police investigation is being carried out.
