George Alagiah returns to BBC News At Six after cancer recovery

The BBC newsreader George Alagiah has returned to TV after recovering from cancer.

Alagiah, the presenter of BBC One's News at Six and GMT on BBC World News, had been diagnosed with bowel cancer, which had spread to his liver and lymph nodes, last April.

On October 28, Alagiah announced that his treatment was over.

He returned to the six o'clock news this evening to a rapturous welcome.

Mark Austin, an ITV news presenter, tweeted: "Good to see my friend George Alagiah back on screen. A top journalist and I wish him the very best."

Dharshini David, who presents Sky News Tonight, said: "Utterly thrilled to see George Alagiah back on BBC News where he belongs. All the very best to him!"

Roger Johnson, a presenter for BBC North West News and BBC Breakfast, said: "Wonderful to see George Alagiah back on BBC News at Six and to be picking up from him again on BBC NWT - we all wish him well."

Finishing this evening's show, Mr Alagiah told viewers: "It's good to be back with you."
