The retirement of Susie Wolff from the Formula One circus is both tragic and frustratingly predictable, but it would have taken some strength to hang up the helmet.

There's no doubt that chauvinists will revel in the news with an "I told you so" grin on their faces, since they believe that there isn't room for a woman on the F1 grid.
