McDonald's unveils new burger range

McDonald's has launched a new range of premium burgers as it seeks to ward off the threat from upmarket rivals.

The Signature Collection cost around £2 more than its traditional burgers and will be made to order with a thicker patty.

The fast food giant said the range is initially available at 28 chains in London and the South but will be rolled out nationally next summer.

The announcement comes amid increased competition from the likes of Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Byrons, which sell pricier, premium burgers.

A McDonald's spokesman told the Press Association: "The Signature Collection combines key and current food trends with quality ingredients to give us a new addition to our iconic menu.

"Following the pilot we will be able to offer this premium product on a scale unlike any of our competitors."

The three burgers – the Classic, the BBQ and the Spicy - are priced at around £4.69 on their own and around £6.19 for a meal.

Due to the thicker patty the new burgers take longer to cook, which means at quieter times there could be a short wait, McDonald's said.

Over the summer, the fast food chain also announced it was trialling table service at selected outlets, with plans to roll it out nationally if it proves successful.
