Her mother Wanda witnessed the incident and said her daughter would be ok but was shocked.

Speaking to WTVR, she said: "She's just hurting, and you know. She's gonna heal, it's going to take a while to heal, but we are just so blessed to have her."

Another beachgoer, Holly Peterson, saw the incident, and helped drag Jill to safety.

She said: "I looked over at her and she said 'somebody help me.' I saw the fin come up and slap her in the face.

"She said 'it got me' so I grabbed her hand and drug her back to the shore."

Peterson was visibly upset while speaking about the experience.

Authorities told NBC News that the woman was bitten "to the bone".

The family said she had received stitches and may need to undergo surgery on the injury.
