NASA spots mysterious 8,000-year-old earthworks in Kazakhstan

NASA has released an image of mysterious earthworks its has spotted in Kazakhstan.

The 8,000-year-old site in the Turgai region covers a massive area of land, where hundreds of mounds are arranged to form distinct shapes.

According to The Weather Network, the giant square is larger than the area of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It is the largest of the shapes and has 101 raised mounds.

NASA senior biospheric scientist Compton J. Tucker told the New York Times: "I've never seen anything like this. I found it remarkable".

The space agency released the images but it was economist Dmitriy Dey who discovered the earthworks in 2007 using Google Earth.

There are 260 different earthworks that make up the site.

Dey believes they are linked to a Stone Age culture and dismissed rumours that they involve aliens or Nazis.

"I don't think they were meant to be seen from the air," the 44-year-old told the New York Times.
