A 10-year-old boy who was attacked by a shark while bodyboarding in Hawaii said he saved himself by kicking the predator in the nose.

Raymond Senensi went to Oahu's Makaha Beach Park after school on Wednesday and was waiting for a wave when the shark "popped out of nowhere".

Speaking to the Associated Press, he said the shark bit his leg and pulled him into the ocean.

At Honolulu's Queen's Medical Centre, he told reporters: "I didn't panic after that. I kicked it with this leg, and then I kicked him in the nose."

The schoolboy's boogie board "pulled me back up because I had my leash on," he told KHON-TV.

He then called for help and swam towards the shore.

NBC News reports that Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources is not certain which type of shark attacked Raymond.

He received stitches and will be on crutches until he can walk again.
