Passengers on a train in London were left "shaken up" after a gunman shot at the driver's cab with a rifle.

The bullet missed the driver's cab, and hit the window of the first passenger carriage, centimetres from commuter Adam Watts' head.

The incident occurred on a London to Kent Southeastern train during rush hour.

The 5.06pm Cannon Street to Gillingham was brought to a halt as it approached Greenhithe station in Kent and evacuated following the incident at around 6pm on Thursday, reports London24.

Adam managed to capture a picture of shattered glass that was hit by the bullet.

He shared the picture online, and wrote: "Thankfully I'm unhurt but when I was right next to this, centimetres, it shakes you up!"

"[I was] just about to move to get up when I saw a flash and heard a smash within a split second."

He added: "@Se_Railway I gave my details to the station staff, thank the driver for making sure I was ok! 👍🏻 #MoreLivesThanACat."

A spokesman for Southeastern said the bullet did not fully penetrate the train's window, only the outer panel.

Speaking to the Standard, he said: "Passengers were shaken by the incident. They were checked over and taken out of the carriage, which was taken out of use."

British Transport Police are investigating the incident.
