1. Go straight to the source
It's well worth calling the hotel you want to stay in directly. Sometimes you'll find that they will match or even beat deals that you've found on the internet.

2. Location, location, location
While staying right in the centre of the city may be easier for some things, you could be paying over and above the average for the pleasure. Head a little further out of the centre and find equally nice accommodation for a much smaller price tag.

3. Book in bulk
Book your car rental, flights and accommodation all in one go. Putting all your travel into one bundle may save you money on your hotel.

4. Perks of the job
Some jobs and businesses will offer employees travel discounts or have connections with hotels. Make sure to check out if this applies in your job, and it's also worth checking with the bank and your credit card company to see if they offer any deals as well.

5. Take some time off
Weekends away don't have to be at the weekend! If you've got time off to take from work, why not make your weekend away a mid-week trip. Travelling at this time is far less busy and you're likely to save a lot of money too!

Loyalty pays off, so if there's a hotel chain that you're a fan of why not sign up for loyalty program which might entitle you discounts and perks in other cities.

7. Go alternative
Look into smaller independent hotels that don't advertise on the big websites. You might be able to save a yourself some money by staying in a lesser-known establishment.

8. Browse the web
Keep your eyes peeled for coupons, vouchers and discount deals that you might be able to find on the internet. Sites like Groupon, Wowcher and LivingSocial may have offers that fit your requirements perfectly.
