Black bear sneaks into car before scaring itself with horn (video)

A cheeky black bear was filmed breaking into a car and climbing into the front seat by a couple on honeymoon in America's Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

In a video captured by William Hefner and his wife, the huge wild bear can be seen walking around a car park before calmly opening the door of a blue Chevrolet Impala and hopping inside.

Hefner and his wife tried to distract the animal but it ignored them, climbing further into the vehicle until it is out of sight for a few seconds. The bear only emerges after beeping the car horn and scaring itself.

Mr Hefner, from Pennsylvania, told the Daily Mirror: "The bear was just acting like it owned the car.

"It was just such a mischievous moment."

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Hefner said: "We followed it slowly to see what would happen but never imagined this."

Earlier this week, it was reported that Florida wanted hunters to kill 320 black bears by the end of October - and on the first day of the season, hunters had already taken out more than 200.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recently decided to reinstate bear hunting in an attempt to control a recent growth in the black bear population.

But wildlife activists believe the hunt was too soon, given that Florida black bears were only removed from the threatened species list three years ago.

The state's Humane Society director said in a statement a few days before the hunt began: "This hunt is completely unnecessary and it's not supported by science or by public sentiment. Research overwhelmingly shows that hunting bears in the woods doesn't reduce the problems with bears in neighbourhoods."
