A car's dashboard camera has captured the moment a motorcyclist was forced to leap off his bike after being chased by a herd of angry elephants.

The man was slowly trying to pass the elephants on his moped in the Khao Yai national park in Thailand, but they did not take kindly to the move.

He was forced to jump off his bike at the side of the road, and was pictured literally begging for mercy (or praying) as he stood in front of the elephant herd.

According to the Mirror, the elephants had already been spooked by a group of noisy bikers a short while before.

Officials at the Khao Yai national park are now calling for noisy motorbikes to be banned from driving through.

The man escaped without injury after the elephants dispersed and left him alone.

Established in 1962 as Thailand's first national park, Khao Yai is the third largest national park in Thailand. Situated mainly in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Khao Yai extends into Prachinburi, Saraburi and Nakhon Nayok provinces. Khao Yai is just three hours away from Bangkok.

The park covers an area of 2,168 square kilometres, including rain/evergreen forests and grasslands.

Khao Yai is part of Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO, covering five protected areas from Khao Yai to Cambodian border. The other protected areas are the Pang Sida National Park, Thap Lan National Park, Ta Phraya National Park and Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary.

Some common mammals to be seen at the park include elephants, bears, gaurs, barking deers, otters, gibbons and macaques. There hasn't been any sign of tiger activity in the park for a while, but camera traps has revealed a significant tiger population in neighbouring Thap Lan and Pang Sida National Park.
