According to the Guardian, the 24-year-old man became unwell after being restrained and lost consciousness before passing away.

He was pronounced dead at the scene when the plane landed in Cork just after 6pm on Sunday.

Reports suggest the man "ran amok" and became "extremely violent", even biting another passenger, before being restrained.

A doctor on board tried to help the man to no avail.

The deceased was not believed to be Irish, but it's believed he was studying in the country.

According to the Irish Mirror, an airline statement said: "Aer Lingus flight EI 485 Lisbon to Dublin, diverted into Cork due to a medical emergency on board.

"There were 168 guests and six crew members on board. The flight landed safely at 17.40 local time."

ITV News reports that a post-mortem will be carried out to establish if the man suffered some form of seizure or had an underlying medical condition.
