Sea search as Briton goes missing in Sydney after evening swim

Updated

A 31-year-old Briton is missing in Australia after failing to return from an evening swim.

A search operation has been under way since Saturday evening for the man, who is understood to have arrived in the country a week ago and has links to Manchester.

Emergency services searched the area at South Curl Curl beach in Sydney overnight, New South Wales police said.

A sea search involving police divers resumed on Sunday morning while Lifesaver Rescue helicopter crews have made several sweeps of the coastline.

The man had been fishing earlier in the day with a friend when he decided to go for a swim around 7pm.

When he did not return his friend contacted emergency services who began the search.
