A section of southern California became waist-deep in mud on Friday - leaving 115 cars stranded.

The most serious mudslides occurred in Los Angeles Country's Antelope Valley.

According to the Guardian, Rhonda Flores, 51, of Bakersfield told the Associated Press: "It was terrifying. It was a raging river of mud. I've never experienced anything like it, ever."

She added: "The water's rushing by, the mud's rushing by, then pieces of trees started coming by and the water was past our doors.

"I'm feeling blessed that we are here."

Scores of people were rescued along State Route 58 in darkness, around 10 hours after the storms hit.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the mudslide was triggered by heavy rain in the LA foothill communities, and that 45 firefighters attended the scene.

The site added that 75 tractor-trailers and two tours buses were among the vehicles stranded.

Speaking to Fox News, Sg Mario Lopez, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol, said the scene as people were being rescued was sheer chaos.

"I've never seen anything like this before. The whole side of the hill just came down onto State Route 58 ... There's no highway."

He said it will take days to reopen State Route 58, where the mud was up to 6ft deep.
