A huge white creature that washed up after the devastating tsunami in Japan has left thousands of people scratching their heads over just exactly what it is.

The Mirror reports that the footage of the 'creature' was shot by a survivor of the 2011 disaster among other debris left on a beach by the flood.

Some people have suggested the creature is a whale or a giant squid, while others think it's a never-before-seen species.

Others, meanwhile, have said it's not a living thing at all, and it's actually just a big boulder or rock.

The devastating tsunami killed nearly 20,000 people.

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake – the most powerful ever recorded in Japan – set off a series of massive tsunami waves that devastated a large area of Honshu's Pacific coastline.

It also damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, leading to a series of explosions and meltdowns in the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl 25 years earlier.

The Daily Mail reports that five million tons of wreckage - including homes and boats - were swallowed up by the ocean when the tsunami struck eastern Japan four years ago.

The paper adds that around 70 per cent of it sank, but that 1.5 million tons were left floating in the sea, and some of it has washed up on the coast of America.

In 2013, an island of debris the size of Texas floated towards California after washing into the Pacific.

According to the Guardian, debris from the tsunami will continue to litter the North American coastline for at least the next three years.
