Man charged after body found in canal strapped to supermarket trolley

A man has been charged with fraud after the body of an Italian carpenter was found strapped to a supermarket trolley in a canal.

Daniel Hastie, 22, of no fixed abode, has been charged with fraud by false representation.

He will appear in custody at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court today, Scotland Yard said.

Paul Williams, 61, of no fixed abode has appeared in custody at Highbury Magistrates' Court charged with preventing lawful burial.

The tattooed body of Sebastiano Magnanini, 46, originally from Venice, was found submerged near a tunnel in the Regent's Canal in north London on September 24, shortly after 9am.

Mr Magnanini, who was 6ft 1in and of medium build, had been tied to a submerged shopping trolley.

He had been living and working in south London, and was last seen by colleagues when he left work in south-west London two days earlier.

A post-mortem examination was carried out but the cause of death could not be determined. Further toxicology tests have been ordered.

Mr Magnanini's family in Venice have been informed of his death.
