Liza Minnelli takes 200-mile Uber ride to concert after flight is cancelled

Superstar Liza Minnelli took a 200-mile Uber ride from Charlotte to Wilmington in the state of North Carolina to perform at a concert when her flight was cancelled.

The 69-year-old's rep Scott Gorenstein told the BBC: "Her connecting flight from Charlotte suffered extreme turbulence on its way to Wilmington. The pilot flew back to Charlotte."

Minnelli's Uber trip cost $200 (£130).

Her driver also turned out to be a former Olympian. Ahmed El-Awady played handball for Egypt in the 1992 and 1996 summer games.

El-Awady drove Minnelli and her two assistants through the night and they arrived at their hotel early on Saturday morning before she performed to a crowd of 1,500 with the North Carolina Symphony the same evening.

Last month, the singer and actress cancelled two UK performances due to a dispute over money.

Liza's rep told Broadway World her appearances at Sheffield City Hall and the London Palladium were cancelled "because of the promoter's failure to pay."

The rep added: "For months Liza has been preparing for these shows and she was devastated to hear of this unfortunate news. She has always thought of London a second home and will miss seeing her friends and devoted fans."
