It's one of Britain's favourite foods and there are thousands of restaurants up and down the country which feature it on their menu, so it's appropriate that today marks the beginning of National Curry Week!

National Curry Week was first started in 1998 in the hope of promoting the cuisine throughout the UK. The week is also an opportunity for businesses to raise money for hunger and poverty charities, many curry houses will host special events and challenges throughout the week.

Eric Pickles, MP, said: "It gives me great pleasure to know that National Curry Week continues to promote our nation's favourite food whilst raising money for charity. Britain just wouldn't be the same without the colour and vibrancy of Asian restaurants up and down the country. Let's celebrate the immense contribution of the Asian Cuisine industry to our country's economy and culture."

In celebration of National Curry Week we've taken a look at the top 10 curry houses throughout the UK according to TripAdvisor.

Prithvi Restaurant in Cheltenham has snatched the top spot with an impressive 5 out of 5 bubble rating on TripAdvisor and 733 reviews. Prithvi first opened in 2012 and the restaurant aims to enhance the already vibrant flavours of Indian cuisine through their menu.

The Indian Tiffin Room in Manchester also features on the list with a 4.5 out of 5 bubble rating on TripAdvisor. The restaurant specialises in authentic Indian street food along with a selection of dishes from all over India.

The Maharaja in Stirling has consistently been named as one of the best Indian restaurants in Scotland and makes it onto TripAdvisor's list too with a 4.5 out of 5 bubble rating. The Maharaja is keen to offer its guests fresh ingredients that make delicious food, which along with friendly service makes for a great dining experience.

TripAdvisor spokesperson, James Kay, said: "If you're not lucky enough to live near one of these top rated restaurants, you can still celebrate National Curry Week in style by searching for the best Indian restaurants in your area on TripAdvisor."
