A man will appear in court charged with the murder of Merseyside police officer Dave Phillips.

Clayton Williams, 18, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey, Merseyside, will appear before Wirral magistrates accused of murdering the father of two.

He is also charged with attempted section 18 wounding against Pc Birkett, burglary and aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

A second man, Phillip Stuart, 30, of Mayfair Court, Oxton, is charged with aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and burglary and will also appear at the court.

Three women, aged 19, 34 and 59, and a 39-year-old man, who are all from Wallasey, have been released on bail after they were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Pc Phillips, 34, was killed on Monday after he was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to use a "stinger" device to stop the car.

The father of two was described as a "hero" by his daughters Abigail, seven, and Sophie, three, in messages left at the scene.

His grieving widow Jen, 28, left a bouquet of white lilies along with a photo of the couple from their wedding day.

Her message read: "Dave, my poo Bear!

"I can't believe you've been taken away from me, you are my everything and have no idea how I am going to carry on with you not by my side.

"I love you with every inch of my heart and will miss you so so much, Your Mrs XXXXX."

Her sister-in-law, Hannah Whieldon, said that just hours before the Everton supporter's final fatal shift, Pc Phillips had been with his wife filming their girl "beaming" with smiles, singing and dancing.

A message from Sophie alongside flowers read: "Daddy, my hero, my super daddy, my world. I love you so much. I will miss our cuddles, tickles, giggles and smiles. I love you lots and lots. Your little princess Sophie x x x x x."

A second bouquet from Abigail, written in scrawly handwriting, read: "Daddy, I love you so much, you are the best daddy in the whole wide world, you are my hero! I will miss you. XXX Love Abigail XXXXX."
