The independent Good Hotel Guide has long been used as the benchmark that all British hotels, B&Bs and inns aspire to.

To coincide with the launch of the latest publication of the guide, the organisers have announce the winners of the César Awards, the hotel industry's equivalent of the Oscars, to honour the best hotels in the country - and there are some beautiful places to stay in this year's list.

Winner of this year's London Hotel is the fabulous Artist Residence in Pimlico. It may be right in the centre of the city, but this peaceful enclave is calm and quiet oasis for travellers.

And year's Walking Hotel of the Year has been named Hazel Bank in Cumbria, a boutique hotel with just seven bedrooms from which to admire the beauty of the Lake District from their windows.

As a leading independent guide to hotels in Great Britain and Ireland, the guide prides itself in offering impartial advice on finding a good place to stay. No money changes hands, and the editors and inspectors do not accept free hospitality on their anonymous visits to hotels.
