China is home to many weird themed attractions (Hello Kitty theme park, anyone?), but the new Communist theme park may be the strangest to open its doors.

The Chinese government opened the Communist theme park on Monday in the city of Wuhan, complete with 29 statues of "great Communist figures" with 100-character-long biographies and sections dedicated to the Communist Party's greatest glories.

Instead of rollercoasters and people dressed up as cartoon characters, the "educational park" features sculptures, interactive experience areas and galleries themed on the party's history.

According to The Huffington Post, Wuhan's propaganda department wrote: "The designers of the park calculated that the elderly, middle-aged, young adults and children would all be able to sightsee, tour and rest in the park, and identify with the core values of socialism."

There were 300 supporters at the opening ceremony but the theme park has not been welcomed by all.

The Guardian reports that China's online community has criticised it for being a waste of taxpayers' money.

On Twitter-like social media site Weibo, one user wrote: "What a waste of good land."

Another said: "It should be called the brainwashing theme park."
