Banksy Murals Sell at Controversial Auction

Murals by the elusive graffiti artist Banksy have sold for less than expected at an auction in the USA.

One of the works up for auction was a large street mural that had been painted on a derelict Detroit auto-factory.

The piece, called 'I remember when all this was trees' was spray painted on the wall of the crumbling Packard factory back in 2010.

The wall was controversially excavated by the non-profit organisation, 555 Gallery, when part of the plant was going to be destroyed.

After they faced theft accusations, gallery administrators promised they wouldn't sell the work but later changed their minds.

It was sold along with a second large mural called 'Bethlehem'.

The small non-profit will get £72,000 from the sale and the company have said that the funds raised will be used for a community arts programme.

This summer the British graffiti artist also opened his own theme park in the UK, called Dismaland.

The park was situated in a derelict lido in the coastal town of Weston-super-Mare.

The bizarre attraction played on the concept of the classic Disneyland theme park and there was even a burnt out Disney castle at the heart of the park.

It has been reported that during the five weeks that it was open, Dismaland raked in a staggering £20 million for the town's economy.

Earlier this year a pair of travellers also made a fortune thanks to the famous graffiti artist.

Banksy approached the couple in the 1990s asking them if they would allow him to paint their lorry trailer. The couple agreed and their lorry became home to a piece of work entitled, Silent Majority. Having decided to part ways with the vehicle the travellers were in line for a windfall of around £400,000!
