Following a recent survey, which revealed that motorists won't be put off smoking while behind the wheel by a £50 fine, chief officers have indicated that they will be taking a "non-confrontational" approach to applying the new law.

From October 1st, it will be illegal for motorists to smoke in the car while carrying passengers under the age of 18. However, 21 per cent of drivers say a fine won't stop them lighting up and a further 29 per cent say they aren't even aware of the forthcoming ban.
