Stealing a lottery ticket dispenser may be a creative way to try and nab the jackpot, but it could easily backfire on you.

Holmes County Sheriff Deputy said they were called to a burglary in the middle of the night at an Esto Florida liquor store.

Once they arrived, they found the front door broken open and a lottery ticket dispenser stocked with more than $7,500 worth of tickets missing.

The police notified the Florida Lottery who instantly voided all of the stolen tickets to stop the thief in their tracks.

But, later that same morning one of the tickets resurfaced, not because it had been dropped in the car park, or handed in by a member of the public but because the thief returned to the same shop with one of the winning tickets from the stolen machine.

Unsurprisingly, Richard Morgan didn't get a pay out but instead was arrested by police at the store and charged with burglary.

Unfortunately Morgan wasn't as lucky as Linda Tuttle from Michigan who totally forgot she'd bought a lottery ticket until she returned to the store where she purchased it.

The cashier happened to mention someone hadn't claimed their $1 million jackpot and when Tuttle returned home she rifled through some old mail only to find the winning ticket!

Luckily the five month time difference between purchase and claiming didn't matter and she was paid the jackpot in full.
