A woman who turned down a second date with a pushy man was stunned to receive a message asking her to pay him back for the drink he'd bought.

Shared with a friend, the exchange of texts has now been shared more than 2,000 times on Twitter.

After a 45-minute date, the unnamed man contacted the London woman to ask for a second date. When she declines, very politely, he continues to insist.

He offers to cook her dinner, saying "I think we have some potential and we should explore it," - and adding a wink. "So when can you make it? I'll cook something delicious and treat you well for dessert..."

But after the woman's fourth refusal, he gets annoyed.

"You're unfair and I'm now sorry that I paid for your drink tonight," he says. "Can I ask you to pay me back for it? It would just be fair."

Later, he messages again to ask whether she's made the £4.50 bank transfer - and, astonishingly, she has. As the friend posting the exchange on Twitter says, "How nice is she, though?"

These days, it pays to be cautious on a first date. In July, Canadian writer caused hilarity when she live-tweeted a blind date at a nearby cafe table.

After explaining that he was writing a screenplay about a guy who's 'just different', he goes on to claim that he looks like James Franco. At no point does he ask her about herself - apart from wanting to know whether she's ever dated a writer before.

And there are several websites where annoyed daters can vent their spleen - and readers can vote on the worst. Still top of the league on Awful First Dates is an encounter from 2010, in which the man got the woman's name wrong, vomited on her room-mate's shoes and wet her bed.

Another called on the evening of the date to ask the woman to visit him in hospital - where she found he'd tried to kill himself because his wife wanted a divorce. A third said he 'pitied' women because 'they need to be controlled'.
