Inquest resumes over petrol-soaked man Tasered by police officer

An inquest will resume into the death of a petrol-soaked man who died after catching fire when he was shot with a Taserby a police officer.

Andrew Pimlott, 32, died in hospital five days after he was tasered during an incident in Plymouth in April 2013.

Mr Pimlott had breached a restraining order by going to a house in the city and while in the back garden he poured a jerry can of petrol over himself and lit a match.

One of the officers called to the scene decided to use his Taser, causing Mr Pimlott to catch fire, suffering severe burns which were to prove fatal.

Earlier this year the Devon and Cornwall officer was cleared of gross misconduct following a disciplinary hearing.

The Crown Prosecution Service had already decided there was not enough evidence to charge the Pc who fired the weapon, because he was trying to save Mr Pimlott's life.

Prosecutors had considered charges of manslaughter by gross negligence or misconduct in public office.

The inquest will resume before Plymouth coroner Ian Arrow and is expected to last up to four days.
