Mother hedgehogs often have to protect their young against larger male hedgehogs who sometimes prey on the young.

These nocturnal animals have about 5000 springy hollow spikes on their back .

Recent and ongoing surveys suggest that the hedgehog population in the UK has declined in the last decade, the animals are now categorised as a priority conservation species.

According to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), if you find a baby hedgehog you should pick it up with gardening gloves, take it inside and put it in a cardboard box with a towel or fleece.

Wrapping the towel around a hot water bottle will keep the animal nice and warm and the best thing to feed the tiny critters is cat or dog food and fresh water.

You can call the BHPS for more information on 01584 890 801.
