A well-known Dublin criminal has been shot dead in broad daylight in what appeared to be a "well-planned" attack in the Costa del Sol, Spain.

Gary Hutch, 34, was gunned down beside a swimming pool in a communal area of the Angel de Miraflores apartments complex, near Marbella, at around 11.30am on Thursday 24 September.

He was killed by a masked gunman in what the Civil Guard believe was a professional hit.

The suspected killer reportedly targeted Hutch after he came back from a run, and shot him by the complex's pool before fleeing the scene with an accomplice getaway driver.

The Miraflores resort is in one of the most popular tourist areas on the Costa del Sol, and hundreds of Bris own holiday homes in the area.

One British expat whose flat overlooks the pool told the Mirror: "It's like something out of a film. I've heard the pool was empty at the time but if it had been midday in August it could have been a bloodbath."

The Irish Times reports that Hutch was a member of a crime syndicate in Marbella that is led by a number of Irish men.

The gang is reportedly regarded as the main drugs wholesaler supplying the Irish market and has been targeted as part of Operation Shovel, an international operation aimed at disrupting its routes and confiscating its assets.

The paper adds that a previous attempt on Hutch's life had been made in August last year, when a boxer was wounded in the legs instead.

Hutch is the third Irish man connected to the gang who has been shot dead in the Costa del Sol.
