Newly-qualified GPs are earning around £180 for a two-hour shift in the evenings and weekends, it has been reported.

Pulse magazine said Dr Ivan Benett, clinical director at NHS Central Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), was paying the rate for evening and weekend work.

Dr Benett, who is also a GP in the city, told the Westminster Health Forum in London last month: "We pay about £180 per session, for two hours."

He added that the CCG found it "easier to recruit GPs coming out of training" because it has "relatively, more training practices than other parts of the country".

When it was suggested that the figures equate to an annual salary of around £176,000, Dr Benett told Pulse: "The payments are for extended hours, not for normal in-hours practice and so it doesn't really relate to those sorts of sums.

"It is reasonable to pay extra for working unsocial hours. Actually, many partners receive that sort of profit share anyway."
