According to the Metro, he set off from their home in Plymouth, Devon, and cycled to catch the overnight Brittany Ferry to Roscoff.
In France, he then travelled a few miles to the hypermarket in Saint-Pol-de-Leon where he bought 30kg of Grand Mere, costing him 166 Euros (£120).
He made the return journey that same evening stocked up with the pair's favourite beverage, which they have been enjoying since 1980.
The couple, who met when they were 18, have one daughter and have been married nearly 50 years.
Speaking to the Plymouth Herald, wife Jackie said David wanted to put his new electric bike to the test, adding: "I wasn't surprised at all; I expected he might do it as we are experimenting with living without a car.
"The panic sets in when we only have about five kilograms left, as we get through about two kilograms a month."
David added: "It's a very basic coffee, which I suspect is why they don't bring it over here.
"It isn't posh, but it's the flavour that Jackie really likes."
