Chinese Airline Launches Special Flights Offering Closer View Of Moon

An airline in China is offering special flights allowing passengers a closer view of the 'supermoon', which is forecast for the end of the month.

Spring Airlines, China's biggest budget airline, is selling tickets for a special set of around 100 flights on the evenings of 26, 27 and 28 September, dates which coincide with a combination of rare and special moon-related phenomena.

27 September marks the mid-autumn festival which is also known as the 'moon festival' and, at around the same time, a lunar eclipse and supermoon will also be visible in the sky.

A 'super moon' occurs when the moon appears about 14 per cent larger due to its proximity to earth.

The latter two events don't coincide often: the last appearance was more than 30 years ago and the next not expected to be until 2033.

Spring Airlines official Yi Mao, told CNN that they are hoping to offer special activities on the flights, including "writing couplets, giving out mooncakes and guessing lantern riddles."

According to the China Meteorological Administration passengers on these flights, which will be travelling between the north of China and the south, should sit on the left hand side of the plane for the best view, while those flying in other direction are best of on the right.
