'Aggressive' hammerhead shark attacks kayaker in California (video)
A man managed to capture the moment a hammerhead shark attacked his kayak in California.
Mark McCracken had been fishing for bonita off the coast of Santa Barbara when the hammerhead appeared and started ramming his kayak, reports The Blaze.
He said he had to hit the shark numerous times before it backed off, but that it then proceeded to "stalk" him all the way back to shore.
Mark posted the video on Instagram, writing: "I was trolling for bonito yesterday when out of nowhere this tweaked out hammerhead started ramming and biting my kayak. I had to hit him over 20 times before he finally gave me some space but still stalked me for a half mile all the way back to shore.
"Even after I was on shore, he paced back and forth in about three feet of water like he was just waiting for me to come back out. Pretty bizarre and crazy experience to say the least."
The incident follows a number of encounters with hammerhead sharks in southern California recently.
Just last week, a kayaker had a rather scary encounter with a hammerhead shark while fishing in California.
Bill Morales was fishing about a mile off Dana Point when an "aggressive" shark circled his boat and tried to steal his catch.
And, in early September, a kayaker received a "deep wound" after being attacked by a hammerhead shark in California.
The man was 1.5 miles off Deer Creek beach in Malibu when a 10ft hammerhead shark bit his lower leg.
Shark expert Ralph Collier said sharks in general are not rare in the area but that hammerheads are. He said there had not been this many sightings of the species since the 1960s.
Speaking to CBS Los Angeles, he added: "These sharks are everywhere. They're moving up here following their food because these warmer water fishes are moving up here."
