Police are searching for a woman who they believe fell over the edge into Niagara Falls on Saturday evening.

Chief Mark Fontanella of the Niagara Falls Fire Department Battalion said: "Somebody just happened to be taking a video of the Falls and unfortunately captured it and they turned it over to the police."

Chief Fontanella has also said that the two-hour search had found no trace of the woman yet.

They say the woman, likely to be in her forties, fell into the water at Prospect Point on the New York side of the Falls.

Authorities say they believe she fell with the intention of harming herself, according to NBC News, the police made this decision after speaking to witnesses.

Lieutenant Clyde Doty of the New York State Park Police said: "We have patrols putting eyes on the water, both Canadian authorities and entities over here as well. The Niagara Falls Fire Department sent crews down to overlook the areas and down in the gorge as well."

It has involved a massive search of a popular tourist destination for a woman whose fate has not yet been determined.

According to reports from Sky News, police have also asked those on the Maid of the Mist tourist boat crews to be on the lookout for the woman.

Niagara Falls sits on the border between the United States and Canada and the area sees around 12 million visitors each year.
