Two men have been arrested after a five-year-old girl died when she was hit by a car in Lancashire.

The men, a 22-year-old from Rossendale and a 19-year-old from Rawtenstall are being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The girl was hit by a white Audi A5 on Bacup Road, Rossendale, shortly after 5pm on Friday.

She was airlifted to Royal Blackburn Hospital but later died.

Sergeant David Hurst, from Lancashire Police's road policing unit, appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

"This is a tragic incident in which a little girl has very sadly lost her life and my thoughts remain with her family at this extremely difficult time.

"An investigation is under way to establish exactly how the collision occurred and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened to contact us as soon as possible.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the white Audi A5 travelling in the vicinity prior to the collision."
