A kayaker had a rather scary encounter with a hammerhead shark while fishing in California.

Bill Morales was fishing about a mile off Dana Point when an "aggressive" shark circled his boat and tried to steal his catch.

According to the Daily Mail, he said: "He went five times around my boat.

"There's a whole bunch of scratch marks... He came by the boat and he just bumped me and then took off."

According to the ABC News, the beach was not closed after the incident but lifeguards did post warning signs.

Hammerhead sharks as well as great whites are being drawn to the coast as warmer weather has attracted lots of fish.

According to NBC Los Angeles, shark lab director Chris Lowe explained: "When we have an El Niño, a strong el niño like we are having now, it brings in a completely different set of characters, a tropical cast.

"It's the red crab, the yellow tail, the tuna - and they're followed by predators."

The latest news comes just a couple of weeks after another kayaker in California was actually attacked by a hammerhead shark, receiving a "deep wound".

The man was 1.5 miles off Deer Creek beach in Malibu when a 10ft hammerhead shark bit his lower leg.

Lidia Barillas, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguards Division, told the LA Times: "It was a bite and release. Nothing severe but a very deep wound."
