Commuters in Newcastle faced an odd scene on Thursday when a host of crabs appeared to be trying to board the train with them at Gateshead Metro station.

According to the Metro, the crabs reportedly escaped from a passenger's bag after it split.

But locals were left scratching their heads about the incident, with one tweeting: "Genuinely baffled as to why and how there was a Metro full of actual real life crabs in Gateshead today????"

The video of the scene was shared on Facebook by Newcastle Uncovered.

The reaction online varied from jokes on the incident to an outcry in the way the staff member just kicks them off the train.

One user asked: "Could they not have just picked them up and put in a bucket instead of kicking them about?"

Another joked: "The crabs were just trying to make a better life for themselves #WelcomeRefugees."

Sadly, the Evening Standard reports that many of the crabs died. The ones that survived were taken to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth.
