So it may not come as a surprise that some of the planet's most popular tourist attractions are also some of the most dangerous. There are many examples of holidaymakers putting their lives at risk in order to see the world's most beautiful spots.

Take the Grand Canyon, one of the most popular tourist attractions on earth. Its beauty lures millions, but an average of 12 people die here every year, according to the park's own statistics. Dehydration, exhaustion, heat and falling over the edge are common reasons.

But it's not just jagged rocks and soaring heights that are hazardous. Did you know, for example, that there's a garden in Northumberland that can kill you in a sniff, a lake in the Caribbean that can boil your skin, and a volcanic island where you need to wear a gas mask on the beach?
