A Staffordshire terrier has been credited for saving a two-year-old from drowning in a dam in Australia.

Alexander Kenney had been at the family property in Coffs Harbour when the incident occurred.

The family's nine-year-old dog, called Leala, conquered an aversion to water to dive in to the dam to try and save him.

She then ran back to the house soaking wet and alerted the family.

According to the Herald Sun, Alexander's mother Lisa Brockbank said: "The dog came running up saturated, which is unusual for her as she doesn't like water if it's cold."

Realising something was amiss, Alex's parents ran to the dam and found him floating face down.

Two friends performed CPR on the boy for 27 minutes before paramedics arrived and he was airlifted to hospital.

He was placed in an induced coma and his parents were told to prepare for the worst.

According to the Daily Mail, Lisa said: "The doctors said be prepared, you may not be taking this boy home and if you do take him home he'll probably have some sort of brain damage."

After 48 hours in intensive care, however, he came around and started asking for kisses.

Lisa said it was a combination of Leala, good CPR techniques, and the helicopter being available that helped to save Alex's life.

Of Leala, she added: "She loves him, there is no way she would want to get wet but she must have gone into that dam for him.

"Alexander was so happy to see her when he came home, he hopped on his bike and they went off together."
