A burglar has made the foolish error of returning to the scene of his crime in Idaho, USA.

A homeowner in Twin Falls came home to find that her house had been broken into and a stranger's mobile phone was left on her bed.

Not only that but an unknown car was parked behind the house as well. Now, this is where the story gets a bit surreal...

A little later, 22-year-old Caleb Funke arrived at the scene of the crime claiming that he was there to collect his car.

Police investigating the robbery became suspicious when Funke said he'd locked his keys in the car and was waiting for locksmith to come and open it.

Realising that the young man's story didn't quite stack up, police arrested Funke and found some of the woman's stolen jewellery in the man's pockets and the homeowner's mobile phone in the car.

According to KMVT, Funke has since been charged with burglary and grand theft.

Although this ranks pretty highly as one of the biggest mistakes a burglar can make, at least he didn't take a selfie on the woman's phone.

In July this year a burglar in Los Angeles accidentally took a video of himself when he grabbed the phone from inside the victim's home.

The phone's owner managed to connect to the video app remotely and passed the footage on to the police who released the images to the public.
